GOLD PRICE LATEST

Gold prices are quoted in Troy ounces.
Troy ounces are NOT named after Greek city of Troy, but are named after the city of Troyes in France.  Troyes made a system of weights for its medieval fair. Henry VIII brought the Troy system to England. He made it England's official standard for minting coins - and for weighing precious metals.

VALUE OF GOLD CONTENT IN JEWELRY

Value of the gold content in jewelry depends on the gold's purity as well as its weight.

US$ = grams of gold x (karats x 1/24)x(1/31.10348)x(World Gold Price per Troy ounce)

Gold purity is measured on a scale of 1 to 24 KARATS (kts):
24 karat gold - 100%  Au - pure gold, very soft and very easily bent, too soft for jewelry.
Therefore the gold is alloyed with silver, copper, nickel or zinc:
22 karat gold - 91.7% Au - still too soft for most jewelry
18 karat gold - 75.0% Au - for fine jewelry, the best for beauty and durability
14 karat gold - 58.3% Au - OK for jewelry but the gold is of a duller colour
12 karat gold - 50.0% Au - not OK for most western jewelry
10 karat gold - 41.7% Au - legal limit for 'real' gold in USA
WHITE GOLD is NOT PLATINUM but is a good cheaper substitute = gold+nickel+copper+zinc.

SILVER PRICE LATEST

Silver prices are quoted in Troy ounces.
Silver prices fell in the mid 1900s to historic lows and have not recovered. It can be argued that silver is underpriced but of course the market decides! Nearly all silver is produced from hard-rock mines, although some placer mines have considerable silver, notably in dry desert regions.

PLATINUM PRICE LATEST

Platinum prices are quoted in Troy ounces.
The world's largest Pt producer is the Russian Federation therefore platinum prices are heavily influenced by Russian exports. But platinum statistics are a State secret in Russia, so platinum prices can swing on news or rumours from Russia. Platinum usually occurs with allied elements (PGMs). Although platinum production is usually from hard-rock deposits, many placer platinum deposits exist including large platinum placer mines in Siberia, and until recently in Alaska.

PALLADIUM PRICE LATEST

Platinum prices are quoted in Troy ounces.
Palladium (Pd) is a precious metal. Pd is a member of the Platinum Group Metals (PGM).
Platinum is often mined with Platinum. Russia is a major palladium miner. Rumours influence prices. Platinum and palladium are mainly produced by hard-rock mines, but placer mines can be locally very important - and highly profitable.

DIAMOND & GEM PRICES
The price of diamonds, and most other gems is partly based upon the weight, measured in CARATS.
Arab traders invented the Carat as a unit of measurement.
The word 'Carat' may be from the dry seeds of the carob tree.
The dry seeds of the Carob Tree are uniform in weight - standardised in 1871 to 0.2053 grams.
In 1914 the metric carat was introduced:
1 CARAT = 0.2 GRAMS
Mines are concerned to get the most USD/CARAT for ROUGH DIAMONDS and ROUGH GEMS.
Larger stones command MUCH HIGHER prices than small, so USD/CARAT is not a linear scale.
For ex-mine prices of rough material, go to web-sites of public companies.
Small miners get MUCH LESS for rough diamonds and gems, due to big mark-ups by traders.
Retail prices of polished/cut diamonds and gems in retail shops are MUCH HIGHER.
