 | ICE SHIELDS Ice Shields (= Naleds, Aufeis, Taryn) are abundant in arid regions of Central Asia, as revealed in Google Earth.
CLICK the picture and the kmz file will open in Google Earth pinpointing hundreds of naleds in Mongolia, Inner Mongolia, Tibet, around Beijing and in Central Asia. UPDATED 1st NOVEMBER 2010
To read about Ice Shields and their role in Climate Change adaptation, buffering and mitigation, go to Supplement #2. |
 | CITIES AND TOWNS Mongolian cities, towns and soums are pinpointed accurately. Now it is quick and easy to find your way around the vastness of Mongolia in Google Earth. CLICK the picture and the kmz file will open in Google Earth. |
 | BORDER CROSSINGS Border crossings are pinpointed accurately. Most are new and not shown on most maps. CLICK the picture and the kmz file will open in Google Earth.
To read about the rapid change in Border Crossings between China and Mongolia, go to Volume 9. |
 | THE OLDEST GREAT WALL The oldest parts of the Great Wall are difficult to find on maps. CLICK the picture to see sections of the Great Wall that are more than 2,000 years old. Google Earth shows that many stretches of these ancient walls are being demolished by mining, roads, railways and rapid urbanisation. |
 | THE LONGEST GREAT WALL The Han Great Wall is the longest Great Wall, much longer and older than the Ming Great Wall of Beijing so familiar to tourists. CLICK the picture to see the Han Wall and its chain of forts extends from western China across the Gobi Desert into south Mongolia and then through Inner Mongolia. We have not yet plotted it further east into North Korea! |
 | NORTHERNMOST GREAT WALL The Liao Great Wall is northernmost. CLICK the picture to see the Liao Great Wall and its chain of 'ring forts' extending from north-east Mongolia into China and entering Siberia before again returning to China. The wall was built by the Liao Dynasty, a powerful tribe of nomads who overran north China ,adopted Chinese culture and built the wall to keep out even more nomads. |
 | MOST REMARKABLE WALL The Jin Great Wall is remarkable. CLICK the picture to see the Jin Great Wall and its remarkable 'double wall' structure peppered with forts. The wall attempted to exclude Mongol invaders and was built by the Jin Dynasty who themselves were originally nomads. In spite of its brilliant engineering, the Jin Wall failed to protect China from the armies of Chinggis Khaan. The Jin Wall is claimed to be visible from Space by the naked eye but we consider the evidence to be inconclusive and unlikely. |
 | MOST ICONIC GREAT WALL The Ming Great Wall is world famous. CLICK the picture to see the Ming Great Wall winding its way across steep mountains. The wall attempted to exclude Mongol and Manchu nomad invaders and succeeded for centuries. Eventually is massive structure was overrun by Manchu nomads and the Manchu Dynasty began. Google Earth shows the environmental damage to much of the Ming Great Wall away from the famous tourist spots.
